Home for most people is a place where family and
friends come together, but it's also a place where we can enjoy some privacy
surrounded by familiar, chosen objects.
The possibility to leave the imprint of one's personality in the home
compensates somewhat for the impossibility of being able to do so at work.
It is as if the increasing stress in the work place is accepted only because
it is possible to relax at home. But home is also the result of negotiated
relationships between males and females, parents and children.
Relations with neighbours are often ruled by the fear of being intruded
upon. However semi-private, architectural systems, the communal areas
of housing blocks for example, encourage the contact between different
social groups through children's games or simple daily chats. Today social
mixing is rare in our cities, but there are still areas where inhabitants
of different ages and backgrounds enjoy a real community spirit.
