On the 17th of July 1936, Spain was seized by a military coup d'état led by General Franco. It was the beginning of the Spanish Civil war, which would last for more than three years. Historians now consider it to be the veritable beginning of the 2nd World War.
Today we are familiar with images from the Spanish Civil War. Films, political pamphlets, historical analyses, all have helped to shed a light on this complex and bloody conflict.
It was therefore but one step to place these archives in their aesthetical context, to situate them historically alongside the international cinema of their time so as to establish the importance of their role in the unveiling of a myth. The aim of this documentary is to rediscover images from the Spanish Civil War though the eyes of a film lover.
