Art is no longer just paintings, it is all around us. The public at large is still too embedded in tradition (landscapes, nude, still life portraits) to accept this new dimension without protest. This series ART ENQUIRIES aims to prove that Art with a capital A is not a sacred impenetrable world apart but something that belongs to us all. It focuses on the role of the artist in our society. Each programme follows the same lines. One central work of art is chosen either because it is the object of a scandal, because it refers to an important event or because it is spectacular. Through news reels, film extracts and filmed interviews with the artists concerned, the why's and wherefor's of the public reaction to a chosen artwork becomes the subject of an enquiry which automatically leads to other works and other artists around the world.

ART & CHILDHOOD
Is contemporary art just a child's game as many of its detractor's maintain? Works and participants Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Alexandre Calder, Jean Tinguely, Hervé and Buddy Di Rosa, Niki de Saint-Phalle, Christian Boltanski. With Jean-Michel Ribettes, art curator.

ART & NATURE
At the end of the sixties many European and American artists left their studios for the countryside and nature. Some created what is known as Land Art. Others brought natural elements into the galleries. Works and participants Robert Smithson, Richard Serra, Richard Long, Christo, Nancy Holt, Andy Goldsworthy, Guiseppe Penone, Claude Monet, Wolfgang Laib, Jean-Pierre Raynaud, Gloria Friedmann, Erik Samakh.

ART & TECHNOLOGY

Since the beginning of this century, artists have been fascinated by technology. Some of them use new technologies to underline man's subjugation to machines, others as sculptural material. Works and participants Raoul Dufy, Marcel Duchamp, Nam June Paik, Wolf Vostell, Jeffrey Shaw, Panamarenko, Takis, Yann Kersalé.

ART & SOCIETY
During the 20th century many creators have used their art to awaken a consciousness of modern-day social problems and hardships. Some of them use their art as a radical tool. Works and participants Hans Haacke, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Hervé di Rosa, Georges Grosz, Duane Hanson, Alfredo Jarr, W. Eugene Smith, Kryszsztof Wodiczko, Tania Mouraud.

ART & COMMUNICATION

Artists are often either fascinated or repulsed by the effect of media on the lives of individuals or communities. Some include the media in their work and use them for their own promotion. Works and participants Fred Forest, Sophie Calle, Jenny Holzer, Andy Warhol, Nam June Paik, Mario Merz, Tony Brown, Piotr Kowalski. With Jacques Séguéla (advertising agency) Christian Caujolle (Vu-Libération).

ART & CITIES

How does a work of art integrate with a public place? Time has a lot to do with this process. Often the contested artwork of today will become the patrimony of tomorrow. Works and participants: Daniel Buren, Richard Serra, Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint-Phalle, Auguste Rodin, Joan Miro, Féraud and Landowski, César, Derbré, Jankovic, Barbara Kruger, Jon Borowsky, Mario Merz, Serge Spitzer. With Claude Mollard (Ministry of Culture)

ART & MEMORY

Memory plays an important part in art. Collective or personal memories in a work of art can have a very pertinent impact on the public. Works and participants Jules Dalou, Eugène Delacroix, Christian Boltansky, Joseph Beuys, Louise Bourgeois, Jochen Gerz, Raymond Hains. With Harald Szeemann, art curator.

ART & SEX
In our so-called liberated society, sex in art always seems to lead to scandal. However, sex was not always taboo, as can be seen in Greek, Japanese or Hindu art. Today sex is used by artists as a provocation. Works and Participants Jeff Koons, Annette Messager, Jurgen Klauke, Robert Mapplethorpe, Georg Baselitz, Constantin Brancusi.

ART& CONSOMMATION
Celebrities, objects, compressed cars, trash of all sorts. Today it is no longer marble quarries that supply artists with their raw material but more often the press, supermarkets, junk yards or scrap heaps. Works and participants César, Arman, Bertrand Lavier, Tom Wesselmann, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Duane Hanson, Martial Raysse, Richard Hamilton, Martha Rosler, Wolf Vostell, Gloria Friedmann.

ART & HISTORY
During the 20th century, art has become a means of bringing awareness and history face to face. By creating new aesthetics, artists express their desire to create a better society and denounce oppression. Works and participants Christo and Jeanne-Claude, John Heartfield, Joseph Beuys, Sophie Ristelhueber, Renato Guttuso, Gerhard Richter.
