While in the last thirty years the automobile and the oil industries have succeeded in reducing atmospheric pollution in compliance with an everincreasing range of environmental laws, young competitors in the Shell Eco-Marathon have obtained extraordinary performances from their strange machines. In 1985, the winner of this international competition drove 680 kilometres using only one litre of fuel and by May 2001, the winning distance had risen to 3444 kilometres!
