Today, as in the
Middle Ages, pilgrims leave home and family for a certain period of time
in order to seek a spiritual experience. The distancing of themselves
from all that is familiar is at the very heart of this experience. They
become nomads in mind and in body. By taking to the road however, all
pilgrims walk towards themselves. As they venture out, they expose themselves.
Their journey covers their own interior geography, a journey where risks
and dangers are intimate and secret.
In this first programme, we follow a pilgrimage to Medjugorje (Bosnia),
a sanctuary which has become one of the principal destinations for Catholics
since the Virgin Mary appeared to some young children there. Then winding
through Shikoku, the most southern of the Japanese islands, we accompany
a solitary pilgrim over rivers, plains and mountains as he undertakes
the most popular of Japanese pilgrimages.

Shrouds, bones, pieces of the "real cross", venerated
remains, all these relics represented the riches of the great abbeys during
the Middle Ages. Indeed the sacred destinations visited by millions of
pilgrims each year are part of a veritable economic structure, whose history
is intrinsically linked with the social and political history of the world.
In this second programme we visit the Sanctuary of Ise in Japan, Lourdes
in France, Fatima in Portugal, Mecca in Saudi Arabia, Touba in Senegal,
Santiago de Compostela in Spain and Sarnatu in India.

Specific gestures
and movements, synonymous with pilgrimages, often have universal characteristics:
for instance, the slow walking, often bare footed, which accentuates the
sense of effort and a certain proximity to nature, but also the purifying
gestures such as the washing of feet, faces and hands for the Muslims
ablutions in the Ganges or in Temple pools for the Hindus as well as the
drinking of holy waters of the temple of Ise for the Shintoists and immersion
in the waters of Lourdes for the Christians. Fire is also a universal
symbol of purification.
In this third and last programme we discover how sacred places often refer
to the same universal symbols which are shared by all religions.
